Fear - Silent But Crippling . . .

It is that doubtful inner voice that can be crippling for some and a motivator for others. On the negative side of this word, individuals are taking their inner fear and allowing it to spill over into other aspects of their life. That is where the crippling portion comes into play. It influences their career, relationships, stifles their successful growth to reach self-actualization. Unfortunately, they can proceed through life never realizing what is silently holding them hostage. It is with awareness when positive results will be created, and eventually confidence will follow, opening paths that will develop into an exciting adventure.

The opposite side of this is when fear becomes a motivator. Some individuals need that extra push that assists them into excelling, but all the while the real reason for this is not understood. In fact, it is less understood because the individual is successful. Why fix what is not broken? Or, should you?

I tend think that it is important to understand why we are motivated, or why we are not motivated and to learn what is holding us back. Is it an abusive past, negative past relationships, negative experiences with co-workers, lacking coping skills, carrying the burden of past experiences unable to move past this, the fear of success and what might happen once in the unknown and out of the comfort zone, is it negative comments that play over and over in your mind?

Not everything is negative, so perhaps you were never taught the skills to build confidence and to be successful. These are building blocks of your future and this is something that you acquire over time. There are too many scenarios to mention, but one thing is for certain, to go from Point A to Point B you need to have a thorough understanding of where you have been and where you would like to go.

The wonderful thing about this, is that you do not have to go through this alone. There are support systems to assist, consultants in specific fields (i.e. career, life) that can help work through these situations with you to promote awareness and move beyond the fear.

With understanding we create awareness. With awareness it will lead to solutions, the solutions will lead to accomplishments, and through the implementation of planning it will lead to success. Soon going from Point A to Point B will bring a sense of freedom.

Customer Service - Joining the Circle of Strength

It is most unfortunate that companies have grown to be so large in most cases, that they have failed at investing in their most valuable asset - employees. CEO's have failed to recognize that it is not them alone building the outcome of the business branding and profits. One way or another everything trickles down to the customer. I am not so quick to blame the employees that we encounter making the errors or when they provide poor customer service; although it is extremely disappointing.

It is the employer's responsibility to set the criteria for employees by leading through example. Employees like to feel that they are able to take pride in their work and that what they do matters. With a lack of leadership from the top of the company down to the bottom, there needs to be a combined effort to implement a common focus. No matter where you are working within an organization or what your salary is, they are all employees within the same organizational framework working to fulfill a common goal. When is the last time you actually witnessed this in any organization? If you do find this shared mindset it will be a rare commodity.

With the economy changing, large companies are not necessarily safely holding the same status with prime positioning. Think back to when there were the mom-and-pop shops that provided excellent customer service with a centered focus. Oh, the good old days! Everything evolves in life, and what we are going to find is that there will be many more individuals starting their very own version of a mom-and-pop business model. To ensure their niche within the market they have an opportunity to bring customer service back to the glory days. It is time to learn from history and stake your claim, to improve upon what has been broken to excel within the market, providing a clear focus to a target market with branding.

Not everything can be fixed, but the tide could change course for the better. As a customer it is our choice to use our voice to demand the service we deserve for our hard earned dollars, and to call companies on the problems within their organization to make them accountable. Everyone of us has the ability to commit to making change a possibility. During the course of trying to stimulate an awareness you will encounter opposition as your message falls on deaf ears. Take to heart, you do not have to tolerate a lack of customer service and I encourage you to give your business to a company that understands that their employees are their most valued asset. Also, that you as the customer have value.

To follow a simple basic rule: "Supply and Demand"

When there were many jobs available job seekers had many to choose from, and employers were on the demand end (needing knowledgeable employees). Now there are many more job seekers than there are jobs, and the potential employer is on the supply end being very selective as they hire to fill minimal openings.

The same holds true for those that will start their own business as they weather the storm within this economy. They are empowered and able to promote change. As a customer, let us work together to send a strong message that we are no longer tolerating this type of service. You see, although companies and potential employers might be on the supply end of the cycle for employment, we as customers are on the demand end of business. This happens to be a very strong status within the consumer market.

As job seekers always strive to be the best that you can be no matter what an employer values. Know your own worth, develop your career and be proud of what you are accomplishing.

Exposed But Not Defeated

Each and every single day we are bombarded with marketing communications, and some individuals fashion their life to fit this profiling. We are exposed to marketing campaigns, trying to prove their way is the right way and that they understand what we need. Some are funny, some provide a realistic need resolution and others can be damaging. We hear messages from experts providing their ideas and wonder if this should be a part of our reality.

There are many ways that marketing can change our perception on how we live. A young girl may want to become super thin because somewhere along the way she perceived this as reality. A parent may be uncertain what they may need for their baby, but then they are exposed to product influencing and they may or may not become acquainted with what is the best fit for them. The latest trend for teenagers will most definitely be a must have to be savvy among their peers. The elderly may be misled or sold more than they would need.

What does each of the listed groups have in common? None of the items mentioned are limited to that particular group. You do not have to be elderly to be misled, and you do not have to be a teenager to be swayed into purchasing the latest trend.

Advertising knows how to tap into our emotional self and our searching for something better. The cycle begins from childhood and well into adulthood. Every single day we are offered suggestions on what to do and how to improve our lives.

As you begin to market yourself to potential employers begin to think about your marketing strategy. When companies are marketing, to their target market, they are focusing on a large geographical area. As the job seeker begins their marketing, they are narrowing their focus to a smaller target market that is industry specific.

This is not the time to follow the latest trend or to be taken back by all the available information. Instead concentrate on what makes you unique, your strongest skill base, make sure you do have what you need to compete within the desired industry, but always remain true to yourself.

What makes us unique is the very thing we tend to shy away from. This is done for various reasons which would include: Being uncomfortable as the focal point of a conversation, being shy or more of an introvert, uncomfortable in a group, and the list goes on. It is important to resolve anything that may be holding you back.

Is it possible to be true to yourself and plan a marketing strategy that remains steadfast and not wavering? Why would you want to follow the other job seekers and conform? By conforming you become just another job seeker in the crowd. Of course, there is a certain realistic amount of conformity which does include avoiding things that are radical. The key is to fit in, but also to excel as you market to potential employers. Allow yourself the freedom of being you. During the interview you will be more relaxed and probably better prepared. At the end of the day you will have a sense of freedom, knowing that you are doing your best and not what others think you should be doing.

To begin your marketing strategies always focus on your strengths and what makes you unique. Once you have determined your approach, be sure to think kindly of yourself and take a moment to verbally state, "I did a good job today and I was successful. Tomorrow I will work towards improving what I have learned today." Do take the time to pat yourself on the back from time-to-time. You do not need the approval of others to be successful. Each of us holds the key that makes each of us unique as individuals. As you begin to unlock your inner talents, take the time to write down your new discoveries to be used as a future reference.

Creating potential or sabotaging a dream?

If a glass is sitting on the table is it half full or half empty? When a problem develops is this just one more issue or the chance to make a difference? When a child cries is this viewed as an annoyance or the chance to help someone in need? Do you feel that people in general and those that are close to you are far more important than anything else as you go about your day? Is your personality type more negative or more positive?

Make a conscious effort each day to be aware of your feelings, how you react to them, those around you and what is truly important. Are you carrying excess baggage with you where ever you go? Communication is very important, whether it is for your career or everyday encounters with those around you. Do you tend to be moody, or when you have a bad day do you take this out on others?

There is a difference between creating potential by approaching each situation with a "can do" attitude and viewing it as an opportunity to learn and grow. The flip side is carrying this around with you and not understanding the harm involved in sabotaging a dream.

Through negative sabotage relationships suffer in all aspects of life. Co-workers will head in the opposite direction as you enter a room, family will walk on eggshells, and probably all the while you are unaware of the damage that is developing. When this is allowed to continue it becomes more and more difficult to participate in the communication process. Eventually others will stop listening, which is another key component of the communication process.

While you proceed through the marketing process, hoping to obtain an interview, take the time to notice your body language, ask others about your communication style and how you could improve, be open to feedback and view this process as a phase of exploration.

Work towards developing your greatest networking tools; work towards becoming the best at being you.

Throughout decades employees have either gone to work because it was a job that paid the bills, or there were those that were fortunate and stumbled across employment that met their expectations. Let us fast forward from the past to the present and revisit a "what if" scenario. What if every job seeker decades ago chose to approach employment by designing a career?

The concept of developing a career was probably accidently discovered by only a few job seekers. Times were hard and employees worked long hours with very few benefits. Employment laws have changed over the years, the economy was good and companies developed into something more complicated than in the past with growing profits.

As time pursued, the economy had stumbled leaving many to lose homes, facing challenges with devastating consequences, unable to support a family, bills are mounting and employment opportunities are scarce. The companies with growing profits were laying employees off and tightening budgets to conserve on revenue. Employees were now beginning to realize that they were not prepared for this change.

The job seeker of the past has found themselves trapped within the whirlwind of chaos not fully understanding what was about to happen. There had been no preparation devoted to developing a career even though this was a large part of their life. The concept of a job verses a career was of no concern....as of yet.

We learn from the past and create ways to succeed well into the future. For those that have chosen to move forward, they will harness the power of designing their career to meet their expectations. The job seeker of the future will fully understand the need to forever evolve and be prepared to weather the next whirlwind.

The first step will be to gather a history of experience, understanding the importance, value and potential for each skill, learn how to package their skill set for marketing, determine the appropriate strategy and continue to take this information to be used as a foundation to begin designing their career.

If employment history were to repeat the cycle of the past there will once again be positions available, but only for those that can truly appreciate the competition followed by the importance of designing their career for success.

Take this time to begin creating a portfolio with letters of recommendation to be used with your Resume Presentation Package. Take the necessary steps to regroup and reach your full potential as you prepare yourself for the challenges that will most certainly be met along the way. This is a journey that every job seeker will travel.

Have you ever taken the time to really get to know your best friend. No, not the person next to you or the one you consider to be your best friend. Your number one best friend is you, and so many of us never take the time to understand why we think, feel, understand or process information the way that we do.

When you look into the mirror what is it that you see? Every single day you are confronted with the one familiar face that will always be with you through good and bad times. As we age each new line represents another year that has gone by, and yet we really do not understand that familiar face that is staring back us.

How is it possible to introduce yourself to an employer and answer the question, "Tell me about yourself and why should I hire you?" It is no wonder that so many job seekers are stunned when confronted with this question. Where should you begin? Should it be with what school you attended, what you hope to accomplish, or should your answer be superficial at best. Every successful speaker knows that it is important to harness the attention of your audience. This is done through the promotion of an engaging conversation and drawing the listener in.

A good answer would be, "I have looked forward to meeting with you and discussing how the projects that I have been working on, really offer possibilities and coincide with your company goals. My commitment to the details, completing projects on time and within budget is always a top priority, but I do know that it is the team effort that contributes to a successful outcome. Who am I and why should you hire me? I value the individuals that I work with and the contributions that they make. As a whole our goals must be focused on meeting the expectations of your company, in doing so we are not only able to develop new ideas, but we will successfully implement a vision."

Wow! Who is this confident individual that is able to understand the needs of the employer, the value of the team as a whole and individually, sets priorities, has a value standard implemented through communication style and continues to put the company first?

Twas The Night Before . . .

When we sleep we dream, solve problems and relive earlier moments. The night before the interview can be stressful, and comparable to the night before the first day of school or a childhood memory.

"Twas the night before the interview and all through the house, no matter how quiet the sound the thoughts would not stop. You tossed and turned and could not sleep, for you were worried about what others may think. You tried and tried to put aside, but it was not to be, for this was the night.

The night before the long awaited interview and you worried what might happen. Would you be tired, would you be late, would you have a professional image and would you be stressed? You looked at the clock as it goes tick tock, another second, another minute, and before long you drifted off. You dreamed of a future and winning the interview, you were stunning and professional wondering why you thought you never had a clue.

In what seemed to be a short period of time, the alarm began to ring and you jumped out of bed, as you anticipated what was ahead. You began to get ready, preparing thoughts of questions that may be asked, and before you knew it you were off in a flash. In the car you did go, driving over hills, slush and snow. You arrived ten minutes early, nervous of course and yet still in a hurry. There it was, the long awaited moment; you were asked to be seated as you continued to smile. Oh my, you thought, how long should I smile? Nervous you are, perspiring perhaps, but you cannot let on because you must be cool and calm. Over and over you chant one word...relax, relax...

Then in that moment you feel a calm, the interview is over and all is well, but you were surprised to find the alarm had not gone off at all. You looked at the clock, in a minute or two; it will begin to ring bringing much closer the presentation of you."

During your job search and after many interviews hopefully the stress level is somewhat lessened. The night before the interview try to get as much rest as possible, allow yourself enough time to prepare prior to the interview appointment, arrive early and do everything you can to prevent rushing against the clock. When we run late stress will increase, and steps should be taken to prevent this.

Success is a technique that is mastered through trial and error. Take the time to find the methods that work best for you.

During the transition of our economy we are required to become creative, inventive, insightful and to develop our career in ways we never thought possible.

More job seekers and less jobs means lower pay. Some job seekers will continue to excel and others will struggle. So much depends upon our ability to turn a negative into a positive, our mindset and the ability to overcome obstacles.

Never underestimate your abilities and take this opportunity to develop your career. As you begin to critique your career goals, this would be the perfect opportunity to develop a two-fold approach. First, take charge of your career focus and work to develop your marketing strategy through exposure, education, volunteer opportunities, networking, teaching a class, mentoring and by taking charge of your career in ways that you never have before. Secondly, look for business opportunities to supplement your income and as a way to enhance your career focus. There are many opportunities available with very little investment. Look within your community for services that are not readily available and begin to plan how you might fill this void.

The opportunities are endless with the Internet available for marketing, government providing fewer services will open a window of opportunity for you to become creative and inventive. Take charge of your destiny and begin to live your life to the fullest extent. Life is an adventure and you hold the key.

Life is complicated and so can the job seeker's path to success. Every job seeker is an individual and the preparation process must include this as a viable strategy. You want to do everything possible to market your strengths. Have you become overwhelmed and are you struggling through this process? It is extremely important that you remain focused by working on issues as they arise.

Should a job seeker follow all the advice that they have read? Well, you would not be an individual if you did, and your job search will proceed like so many others. You do not want a laundry list of bullets going on and on throughout the resume, but you do need them. It is essential that your resume flow flawlessly and is an easy read. Should there be an exact limit on how many bullets to use? To have five or six is a good guideline for each segment, but if you should have a seventh one will that really make a difference?

Handling the gap within employment years is determined by everything else listed on the resume. There are various ways of handling this should it be necessary. Should you be straight forward on this? That would depend on how large the gap is, and it could be addressed within the cover letter or at the interview. Remember that the potential employer is not interested in the details of your life. Only offer information when needed and be very focused when doing so. You do want your resume to have substance and to be meaningful. After all, this is your career and your resume is your calling card. The resume must be able to successfully speak for you in your absence.

Should the job seeker be frantic over all the available information pertaining to this subject? I have had a client communicate actual fear, during her initial call, with regard to a resume having more than one page. She was certain that one page is all that she should have. It is most unfortunate that she believes this, because the first page barely provides enough information for most job seekers. It is so important not to close yourself off from possibilities and to refrain from being narrow-minded.

The resume is not the only item a job seeker should be concerned with. The marketing of your resume is only one phase of this process. You need to be able to successfully sell yourself in an interview. The complexity of this subject, along with the dire struggles with the economy has hindered the job seekers ability to remain focused as they struggle to find what works. If the marketing strategy is not working it is time to change directions, remain focused on the end result, clear your mind of everything you have learned up to this point, begin to think outside the box, plan a new marketing strategy and begin again.

If a company is selling a product and the advertising was not successful, how would they handle this? Their marketing department would need to develop a new marketing strategy so that they are successful in reaching their target market. If the consumer prefers the product in red, then it would be disadvantageous for the company to market it in blue.

While you are considering your career focus begin to ask yourself the following questions.
1. What does the potential employer (target market) hope to gain when hiring a new employee?
2. Do I have the listed skills, the education and the experience?
3. How can I make myself (the product) more marketable?
4. Am I able to communicate a positive first impression? This does not refer to age, weight or culture.
5. Are there personal issues that would need to be dealt with prior to moving forward with my job search?
6. If I were the potential employer (target market) would I hire me?

The employment market has changed and probably will never be as it once was. Every job seeker must adapt to these changes and evolve in the same manner. This can be stressful, because most of us have never seen the economy producing negative results. What will your strategy be as you compete to sell your product?

Cherishing a Reflection

What was once known as a New Year is winding down and will soon close making way for the next. In 12 months what was accomplished, what memories filled your heart with joy, and what is your hope for a better tomorrow? As you walked the path before you, working to overcome the hurdles that stood in your way, you now find that your footsteps are exactly in the same place that they were a year ago, with one exception. The New Year will bring new goals and resolutions as you look forward to beginning again with a renewed strength.

Just before the onset of the New Year arriving, you must go through the hustle and bustle of the holidays. It is this time of year that means many things to many people. It may mean shopping for the perfect gift, making a special family recipe to share during the big meal, for some it will mean a tree glittering with colored lights, and for others it means special moments with family crammed into a small window of time.

Everyone seems to be hurried as they race against the unyielding moments whirling away from them. You rush to the store to purchase the latest hot item that is on sale. You drop with exhaustion at the end of the day, wondering where you will find the strength to get through tomorrow?

Have you ever stopped time for even a split second? Instead of rushing through the store have you taken a moment to look at those around you? Perhaps a smile or a gesture of kindness will stop the clock to a slower pace. Have you ever stopped at a street light and watched all the people in the vehicles pass you by? Every single moment within a day you have connected with others in so many ways. So much in fact that it really goes unnoticed, because life is complicated and it distracts everyone from realizing what is important every moment of every year.

This holiday season may hold for some individuals memories that they wish they could change. The loss of a job, a death in the family, any tragedy really would break the hearts that should be looking forward to the upcoming season.

The children rely on memories to build a future. They are molded into adults by the moments that are shared with them. I was fortunate to have a grandma that made the holidays special as she baked her Santa Claus cookies. Not once did I have the heart to ruin this moment for her, or to let her know that I hated coconut. So I would carefully break off his beard and hide it in the trash. I am sure she knew, but she never took that moment away from me. The gift that she provided was clear and cherished. It was her sharing and my act of kindness that provided a bond between the moments we shared. It was the memories and the moments that I took with me throughout my life, and I used it to build my future.

As you begin to enjoy the moments that have been given to you, please look around you and be aware of those that feel a loss this holiday season. There was a time that communities would come together and help those that were having a difficult time. During this holiday season, try to create a community that stops time and slows it down so that others may catch up, by providing your assistance.

No Job Insight - What am I doing wrong?

With unemployment registering at a high level and jobs being scarce, it is easy to be trapped within a circle of anticipation, disappointment, hope, despair, and wondering if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. After trying everything you are left wondering why you should keep up the fight. You reason that there is a need, because the bills need to be paid, perhaps you have others depending on you, and so the circle begins again.

The satisfaction of having control over your life has left. You feel as if you are a pawn within the employment game. Before the circle begins again, it is time to look at this with fresh eyes. There are certain aspects that you have control over and others that you do not. Perhaps you do have more control than you realized before being drawn into the rotating cycle.

Throughout our life we experience change with new developments replacing the old. The same is true with the employment market. Probably for the first time you are experiencing this type of struggle. Perhaps you have worked for the same or only a few employers up to this point. One day you awakened and you thought this was going to be just like any other day, until everything changed. You heard of others losing their jobs and did not really give much thought to it until it happened to you.

Now that you have joined the job seeker club you are finding that the competition is like never before. The employment game has now become too real and unfamiliar to you. You begin the job seeking process like those before you and among you. Listening to the news you realize that the statistics now include you. What you did not count on, is that there are new rules and strategies built into the new employment game. You may be feeling outdated as you muddle through the process hoping to soon regain your bearings.

What is a resume, a cover letter, the art of networking, electronic submissions, job posting sites, and what are unemployment benefits? Yes, the way to win the employment game is by using strategy and self-preservation.

Without realizing it you have now become your own sales agent. If this is unsettling it is understandable but not hopeless. If you are like most you were not prepared for the new employment game prior to its release date, when the economy shifted most everything. So how will you begin to learn the rules to this new game?

First take a moment to express your frustration. You have every right to be upset because this is not fair, but it is a reality and must be dealt with.

•Gather all your employment information, perhaps this information is in disarray and overwhelming.
•Organize your information from current to previous employment and make a list.
•Think about your strengths and what you brought to each company.
•Organize your thoughts and list them for reference.
•Begin thinking about your career growth over the years.
•Research what employers are seeking and begin to evolve into a new you through exploration.
•Determine the geographical area where you would like to work and the practical aspects of your decision.
•Seriously take a long look at your career path and determine if there is something that you may be lacking that an employer would be looking for within your criteria.
•Do you need more training that could be acquired through volunteering, a degree, classes that are more streamlined, an internship, or do you need credentials?
•Begin to create a draft of your resume and a cover letter template that would be further developed at a later date for a specific employer.
•If you need help through the resume creation process seek out a professional. There is not one person that is good at everything, so just accept this as one of the items you do not have control over, but do not let this hinder your career growth.

Begin to realize that for the first time you are actually taking control of your career. You are no longer satisfied with going the direction that was handed to you, but you are determined to seek out every opportunity visible and invisible to you at this time.

Begin applying for positions that you find on the Internet, but do not allow yourself to get stuck at this point of the game. This is only one strategy and it should not be your only strategy.

When you are met with a potential opportunity, and a resume may not be appropriate or available, leave a business card as you begin to network. Seek information so that you gain a connection.

Begin to build your network. Every individual that has started a business has gone through this very same process of exploration. Through a detailed process document what works and what does not, and begin to adapt.

When there is an opportunity to attend an interview be prepared, document what you have learned and what could be improved for the next time.

As you work through this process, perhaps it is time to increase your skillset by seeking opportunities to use existing skills independently as a sole proprietor.

There is one thing that we can be sure of throughout the entire employment maze, is that it is here to stay. Those of us that will evolve and are able to adapt will be successful. Your career took years to develop and this new phase will also be a process of exploration and development.

If I were to provide for you, just one clue to winning the employment game, it would be to be good to yourself by remaining positive through exploration, be proud of your achievements, learn from your mistakes, and develop a keen sense to recognize an opportunity.

Future Accomplishments Hindered, I See the Light

The poor economy has really provided for many, a bump in their road to successfully achieving their goals. Every one of us has been touched by the aftermath of a continued downward flow of circumstances out of our control.

For some it was the loss of their career, home, financial security and the inability to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As the economy continued to pick apart the valuable increments of their accomplishments, the situation just continued with more of the same as they tried to regain their independence.

Some individuals are finding that they are now actively participating within government social services, which was designed to create a safety net through the use of Unemployment Benefits, energy assistance, food support, and many more.

It is most unfortunate that these programs do not provide the means to sustain a family, pay the bills or to provide the life you once had.

Then there are those individuals that are near retirement, and as they looked forward to reaping the benefits from their years of planning and saving, it was taken away in what appeared to be an instant. They find themselves no longer able to retire and the only step they can make at this point is to continue working.

Perhaps you know someone that has done everything that they could to find their way out of the unfortunate circumstances and they are unable to accomplish this. Do you find that your future has just stopped, as you find yourself participating within programs that you once criticized for others? It is definitely difficult to ponder, that there once was a time when many wanted to cut government spending within the social programs you may find yourself participating in during hard times. It is easy to think that it will never happen to you and then one day it is difficult to swallow

What now? What can you do for yourself or someone else after they have felt helpless to change what has happened. Their life has unraveled all around them, and they soon begin to feel too weary to muster the strength to dust themselves off and begin a new.

I have met many very wonderful clients that have struggled with losing a big part of their daily life. They have worked many years and now found themselves stuck within the cycling economy, wondering where it will take them next. They are anxious to get back to business and are concerned about their future.

After it is all said and done, once the economy has reached your self-esteem it is time to create a plan of action. What does it mean to have low self-esteem and how can it be measured? This may be a new territory for many individuals as they struggle to get through each day with a dark cloud of rejection hanging over them. To have a good self-esteem would mean that you are confident, self-reliant and able to feel positive about who you are both inside and out. Having a low self-esteem would mean that you are not feeling good about your situation, you are losing confidence in your abilities until one day, when you are feeling you have reached your lowest point, it is hopeless, and you want to give up because it is just too hard.

Creating a Plan of Action: By taking the necessary steps to get back on track you will slowly begin to regain your self-esteem. Often times, we are unable to change outward circumstances and find that our inner confidence was based on the wrong foundation. It is time to create a new foundation as you work once again towards the necessary goals to succeed. Perhaps, things will never be as they once were, but that is alright. Change can really be a good thing when you begin to build a solid foundation of success.

As the Senior Consultant for I.A.M. Resumes, it is my position to help clients realize just how wonderful and successful they really are. Often times, what is important in life is lost within the hurried shuffle of everyday living. We lose bits and pieces of the things that really matter most. Are You Sabotaging Your Employment Opportunities?

When it comes to looking for employment opportunities there are many things that can sabotage a job seekers success. Discovery is a window of opportunity available to everyone.

Case Study: Melanie is a woman with a powerful personality capable of adjusting her persona to fit each situation. There have been many professional positions in her past employment. She is presently unemployed for over a year, overwhelmed and unable to focus in any particular direction to continue her job search; there are mounting obligations weighing on her.

Her self-made resumes are not up to par and are mediocre at best. She has an excessive amount of paperwork that continues to clutter her efforts as she goes through them one-by-one recalling her past employment. Setting priorities seems to be an issue and she is unaware of how her behaviors can result in a cause and effect approach playing into her life and career.

Main Concern: Inability to receive a job offer or obtain many interviews.

Through discussion, it is evident that there is a strong need to vent frustration before pursuing a future. Without conscious awareness, it is possible to carry past behaviors into the future that will sabotage successful efforts. Many times an individual will continue the same old patterns totally unaware of how to change them. Melanie was unaware that the experiences life has provided would be playing out in negative venues through her thoughts, actions, and communication.

Melanie's mindset when beginning and ending an interview was complicated further by the negative image she had been portraying. It was her body language, the choice of wording and her inability to stop and listen, preventing her from picking up on cues during the interview process.

As long as past experiences seemed to creep into her communication style, she was most certainly going to struggle through interviews without success. There was a cycle taking place that seemed to always begin and end the same way. Through self-awareness, Melanie began to realize that she could no longer replay negative patterns and she would need to replace them with positive reinforcements. She would go into an interview believing in her worth with confidence and no longer expecting a negative outcome.

Melanie needed to focus on goals that would help her to move forward with positive growth throughout her life, both personally and professionally.

Goals
* Make a list of emotional experiences that are negative and put them to rest.

* Work on communication skills to foster a connection with engaging conversation.

* Create a list that would include accomplishments both personally and professionally.

* Determine a starting point, by clearly focusing on what is important and necessary to accomplish future goals.

* Begin organizing a career strategy by eliminating unnecessary documentation, create a portfolio and hire a professional to create a resume that represented her career experience to eliminate a mishmash of information.

* Increase confidence, build on strengths and implement a positive image.

Although this is not the end of Melanie's journey it will provide for her a starting point. As she continues towards the path of success, she will be able to use her listed goals as building blocks used to create a solid foundation.

The increments of our lives are intertwined and complicated, with boundaries becoming blurred at times as we try to distinguish and separate what is important and valuable. It is feasible that negativity will be carried into the interview and our career if we allow it. We all need good communication skills so that we can speak in a clear concise manner in addition to being a good listener. In the interview you will need to respond to the stimuli in the environment, listen and watch for the communication style being used by the interviewer as you work towards making a connection.
